Caption This:  How We Got Here!

Reading has played a major part in Literacy, but continues to be the subject that students want to utilize last.  I have taught college reading courses for 3 years now and I continue to see one of several issues with reading, "students rarely like to read unless necessary."  I usually do an Entrance and Exit Interview assignment when a student is in my class to determine if they are with reading and how to meet them there to move them to further in their reading abilities.

The Reading Entrance and Exit interview questions are given to students to assess their reading abilities the first day of class and reassess them at the end of the semester. About 80% of my students have stated that reading is their last subject of choice.

The burning questions:

  1. "Why is reading your last subject of choice?" and how we can change the majority to believe that reading is fundamental and a exciting experience.
  2. What ways can we increase reading in our community of adolescent, middle, high school, and college students.
With these questions exploring the likes and dislikes of reading and how to change the objective of it to motivate and open creativity when reading.....................:

Reading for me was a battle of being stressed, time constraint issues, and boring.  My parents never gave me the talk about, "how to be a better reader." At school I would do just enough to get the gist of what I needed to do for the assignment.  It wasn't until I went to college that, "just enough" was  not enough.  I cried, tried to fight back, and lost the battle of trying to read!  Then inevitable happened, "I had to read." In doing so I created my own tips and tricks to reading in learning to read more.  I think it more about finding your balance in reading.  Every person has their way of reading and no one way is right.
